The author describes the struggle of American cities to reinvent themselves for the post-industrial economy and the pivotal role the arts play in that process. Much time and money was invested in information infrastructures and new technology, but communities must also focus on the importance of creating jobs, dollars, and a greater quality of life for their residents. At the center of that effort is the recognition of arts and culture as vital to economic development in the community which in turn has brought about the emergence of the creative class in the workplace.
