Americans for the Arts

Career 360 is a new dimension of convention this year. It is happening on Saturday afternoon, June 21 and runs concurrently to ArtVenures and Walk&Talks. Looking for some career advice or ways to lead a sustainable career in the arts? This program is for you!

Career 360 begins over lunch with Talk Turkey (or Tofu) and a facilitated roundtable on various career development topics. Grab a sandwich from the buffet in CenterStage and head over to the Philadelphia Ballroom for the following discussions:

  • You've Graduated - Now What?
Join graduate students from Drexel in a brainstorming session around how to transition from unemployed student to full time employed professional. This session is ideal for students both in and out of school or young professionals trying to find their first job in the sector.
  • Leading From the Middle
Amy Kweskin will facilitate a discussion of leading from the middle of an organization. In the non-profits, we all lead with various forms of limited authority. Find ways to develop a sense of agency for yourself or for your staff.
  • Third Careerists - Paying It Forward
Maryo Gard Ewell has evolved through many career stages in her life. What are some tips for staying current and relevant in the final third of your career life? What do you want your legacy to be?
  • Resume Review with a Corporate Eye
Jennifer Wijangco and Ruby Classen come to the arts from the for-profit sector. Bring your resume and get a critique from two professionals who know what the high bar looks like. Discuss tips for writing a strong cover letter and some dos and don’ts around interviewing.
  • What is This Thing Called "Coaching"?
What’s the difference between coaching and counseling? Dewey Schott and Julia Fabris McBride are both certified coaches and will answer your questions about how the coaching process works and what you can expect from a coaching relationship.
  • Going It Alone - Starting Your Own Organization
Starting your own organization requires a big leap of faith. Sit down with Marisa Catalina Casey and talk about the strategies and challenges of going it on your own. The first years can be particularly stressful. Find a peer for support and perspective.
  • Wayfinding in the Ivory Tower
There are worlds within worlds in higher education. Silagh White will lead a discussion for higher education professionals around navigating the politics, diplomacy and status issues imbedded in working on campus.
  • To Get a Degree or Not Get a Degree….
The decision to go back to school is not an easy one. Full time or part time? And what about those loans? Is it ~really~ worth it? Talk with Andrew Taylor, President-elect, Association of Arts Administration Educators, about ways to structure your graduate school experience for you.
  • Searching for Information about Searches.
Let’s bring some transparency to the whole search process for both employers and job seekers. It is not as secretive as you would think. There are a lot of great resources out there and pick up some tips from your peers who have been around the block on this one before. Bruce Thibodeau will facilitate the discussion.
