Annie Calkins has lived in Alaska since 1972 when she taught art and social studies in the Southeast village of Craig, population 650. Since then she has worked as Curriculum Director for Aleutian Region School District, Language Arts/Fine Arts Specialist for the Alaska Department of Education and Early Development, Assistant Superintendent of Schools for Juneau School District, among other things. Calkins has served on the Alaska State Museum Board, Governor’s Commission on Children and Youth, Alaska State School Board, Alliance for Arts Education Regional Board and is now the Vice Chair the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council. Currently she is the Projects Evaluator and Advisor to the Alaska Arts Education Consortium and facilitator of the Alaska State Council on the Arts Initiative on Arts Education. Calkins has worked in urban and rural, remote Alaska, particularly with tribal organizations, local school districts and the University of Alaska. She lives in Juneau, still the capital of Alaska.
