Nelson Rafael Roman is a Holyoke City Councilor, Executive Director, and Community Activist. He is Puerto Rican, Gay, openly HIV positive and formerly homeless. Currently, Nelson is a resident of Holyoke’s Ingleside neighborhood. Nelson was first elected in 2015 with 60% of the vote, then in 2017 with 80% of the vote. He has pushed major progressive legislation in his two years on the Council. He is the Co-Chair for the New England Caucus of Puerto Rican Elected and Appointed Officials (85 Members all across New England). Nelson’s professional career is as the Executive Director of Nueva Esperanza Inc., and Artistic Director/Founder of Palante Theater Company. In 2017 he was named to Western Mass Business West 40 under 40 Class, and El Mundo Boston’s Latino 30 under 30 of Massachusetts.
